My Reasons to Attend an HBCU (Historically Black College or University)

The upcoming spring semester is upon us, and many are returning or going to college for the first time. In either way you wish to go, physically or virtually, choosing an HBCU has its perks. After attending snd graduating from an HBCU, these are the conclusions I have drawn about why someone should attend.

What even is an HBCU?

An HBCU stands for Historically Black College or University. A college that was created during a time of adversity and oppression for black people.

1. Diversity- Although, the creation of these schools were for Black people, other races and ethnicities can attend. Students come from all over the United States, and the world! I have encountered people from various locations, including Nigeria, Thailand, and Russia.

2. Acceptance- Personally, I believe African Americans are the most accepting people out there! At some colleges, it can feel like nobody cares or maybe you feel like an outcast, not at an HBCU. There's something for everyone.

3. Networking- People always will have your back and keep an ear out for you at an HBCU? Need a recommendation letter? Ask a professor, they KNOW you! Need an internship somebody might know somebody.

4. History- Every school has its own history but it is great that you can see your culture's history represented by people that look like you.

5. Homecoming- I couldn't finish this without including the band and homecoming! It's like a giant family reunion, you can go to anyone's tent and get great food, enjoy a good dance and watch a great game followed by the band!

Do you already attend an HBCU or are thinking of going to one? Post in the comments!
